What does a bong stem do and why is it important?
A bong stem is one of the most important components, it’s the part that carries the smoke from the cone piece down into the water chamber for filtration. Without it, there is no filtration and without water filtration, your smoke is hot and harsh. Stems are made from either brass or glass and come in different lengths. A longer stem sits deeper in the water which means more of the smoke is submerged and filtered which provides you with cooler and smoother hits. A shorter stem sits higher in the water and delivers a stronger, more direct hit.
How do I know when it’s time to change my metal bong stem?
Visually, if the stem looks dented, scratched or if there are signs of corrosion then it may be time for a replacement. If you notice an odour after you have cleaned the stem or if your smoke just is not tasting the way it should, then replacing the stem is something to consider. Another sign that the stem may need replacing is If you have cleaned it with dish washing liquid or isopropyl alcohol and it still feels like it is blocked when inhaling. Air flow may not feel tight If the stem is not sitting firmly in the rubber grommet, try replacing the grommet first.
How can I tell if a 10cm metal stem will fit my bong?
Once inserted, a metal stem should ideally be located slightly above the rubber or glass base of the bong and should stick out of the grommet between 1.5 – 2cm. Insert a pencil or straw through the grommet – slightly above the base of the bong and make a mark at the point where it is sticking out of the grommet between 1.5 – 2cm. Take it out and measure with a ruler. This will give you more of an idea of the length of the stem which is needed.
How to clean a metal stem properly and how often to do this?
Keeping your metal stem clean is very important for hygiene reasons and also preserving the quality and flavour of your smoke. Follow these steps to thoroughly clean your stem:
- Remove the stem from the bong
- If it is dirty, rinse with warm water

- Rinse the stem with warm water and let it completely air dry before reassembling.
If you smoke every day, we recommend washing the stem every couple of days but if you smoke casually, then wash your stem once a week – this will prevent any grime from building up and also stop bacteria from growing.
